Pentagon Enlists Elon Musk for Project Meridian Future Warfare Study

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth has announced that Elon Musk will take on a new advisory position, helping to steer a Pentagon research effort called Project Meridian. The initiative is designed to pinpoint the weapons and technologies American forces may require for conflicts decades ahead. Hegseth revealed the plan during a State of the Force address at Marine Corps Base Quantico in Virginia.

Musk will share leadership duties with Anduril founder Palmer Luckey and former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, all reporting to Pentagon Chief Technology Officer Emil Michael. According to Hegseth, the trio’s first session was set to occur immediately after his speech in a secure compartmented facility. He described the group’s mission as identifying and fielding systems for battlefields “from under the Earth to beyond the Moon,” while stressing that Meridian is not intended to generate new strategy or policy papers.

A memo circulated after the announcement sets a January 28, 2027 deadline for Michael to submit findings, a roughly 120-day window. The document lists artificial intelligence, autonomy, directed energy, robotics and biotechnology as areas likely to reshape warfare, and says the results will be published as a public report with a classified annex. The memo does not name Musk directly; his involvement was outlined in Hegseth’s remarks and a Pentagon press release.

The scope of Meridian intersects with several of Musk’s business interests. SpaceX ranks among the Pentagon’s biggest contractors, and the study’s focus on domains stretching from subterranean depths to cislunar space aligns with tunneling and lunar ambitions tied to his other ventures. Tesla’s autonomy work and Optimus robot program also fall within the technologies the memo identifies. Meridian was one of six initiatives Hegseth unveiled, alongside a planned Autonomous Warfare Command that the department aims to establish as a four-star combatant command by October 1, 2027.
