OPINION: Pickup Trucks Have Been Under Government's Thumb for Decades

Few vehicle categories have been as heavily influenced by policy as the pickup segment. From the long-standing chicken tax to recent tariff battles, and even the steady tightening of emissions standards, the truck market has never been allowed to operate purely on free-market principles. It’s a reality that many in the industry have quietly accepted, but it’s worth asking whether this heavy-handed approach has truly served the public or simply protected a few domestic players. The result is a marketplace where prices are often inflated and choices are limited, all in the name of shielding certain manufacturers from foreign competition. That may have worked in the 1960s, but today the global automotive landscape is vastly different. Consumers now face fewer options from overseas brands, while the big three continue to rely on truck profits to sustain their operations. In many ways, the pickup segment has become a test case for how government intervention can shape an entire product category, often with unintended consequences.
