Omnivision Unveils OAX7700 Image Sensor with AI Parking Surveillance

Omnivision has introduced the OAX7700, an image sensor designed to bring AI-powered parking watch capabilities to vehicle cameras. According to the company, the sensor achieves a 97% power reduction compared to typical always-on parking monitoring systems. But beyond efficiency, the OAX7700’s open neural processing unit (NPU) and over-the-air (OTA) update support make it a future-proof option for software-defined vehicle (SDV) architectures.
The OAX7700 is part of a growing trend where vehicles rely on sophisticated onboard sensing for safety and convenience. Its open NPU allows automakers to deploy custom AI models directly on the sensor, enabling features like intelligent parking surveillance without draining the battery. OTA updates ensure the sensor can adapt to new requirements over time, extending its relevance in long vehicle lifecycles.
By integrating OTA and an open NPU, Omnivision positions the OAX7700 not just as a component but as a platform for ongoing innovation. This aligns with the industry’s shift toward SDVs, where hardware must support continuous software improvements. The sensor’s power efficiency addresses a key pain point for electric vehicles, where battery drain from always-on systems can impact range.
While specific vehicle programs or partners were not announced, the OAX7700’s features target next-generation camera systems. Its combination of AI processing, energy efficiency, and upgradability could make it a compelling choice for automakers developing advanced driver assistance and parking solutions.
