Ola Electric's In-House 4680 Bharat Cell Clears ICAT Test in S1 X+ 5.2 kWh

Ola Electric has reached a new engineering milestone in India, securing ICAT certification for a variant of its S1 X+ scooter equipped with the company’s own 4680 Bharat Cell. The certified configuration carries a 5.2 kWh battery pack, according to ET Auto.

The 4680 format refers to the cylindrical cell dimensions, and the Bharat Cell name signals Ola’s push to localize core battery production rather than rely on imported packs. Getting a homegrown cell through ICAT homologation is a notable step for an Indian two-wheeler maker, since regulatory approval is required before such hardware can reach customers.

The certification covers the scooter in its 5.2 kWh form, though the report stops short of confirming launch timing, pricing or performance figures. Even so, the approval suggests Ola is moving its proprietary cell technology closer to series production within its existing S1 lineup.

For a company that has largely built its identity around vertical integration, bringing battery development in-house could matter as much as any single model update. Whether the Bharat Cell migrates across the wider S1 range remains an open question.
