Nexperia and Aurobay Forge GaN and SiC Powertrain Alliance

Semiconductor supplier Nexperia has entered an alliance with Aurobay, a powertrain technology company, to develop gallium nitride (GaN) and silicon carbide (SiC) solutions for next-generation electric and hybrid vehicles. The collaboration aims to integrate advanced power electronics earlier in vehicle development cycles, a shift that could accelerate efficiency gains in high-voltage systems.

Industry analysts see this partnership as evidence that chipmakers need to engage with automakers and suppliers at the design stage rather than later in the supply chain. By combining Nexperia’s expertise in wide-bandgap materials with Aurobay’s powertrain engineering, the duo plans to deliver compact, high-performance inverters and converters tailored to new architectures.

Aurobay, which emerged from Geely’s powertrain operations, brings production experience across hybrid and combustion technologies, now pivoting toward electrification. The partnership signals a broader trend where semiconductor firms proactively shape hardware specifications to meet tightening efficiency and emissions standards worldwide.

For fleet operators and consumers, the practical outcome is expected to be more reliable and thermally efficient power electronics, potentially lowering ownership costs over time. The first products from this alliance are anticipated within the next few years as both companies align roadmaps with OEM launch schedules.
