Newlight Raises $9M to Fuel Cargo Ships with Hydrogen

A California-based startup called Newlight has secured $9 million in seed funding to advance a technology that injects hydrogen into the fuel systems of cargo ships. The company claims this approach can significantly improve fuel efficiency and reduce emissions without requiring a complete overhaul of existing vessel engines. Newlight has already completed a test voyage spanning 8,500 nautical miles from Singapore to Ghana, demonstrating the practical viability of the system on a real-world shipping route.

The technology works by introducing hydrogen alongside conventional marine fuel, which enhances combustion and allows for lower fuel consumption. Unlike other clean-shipping solutions that demand new engines, retrofitting, or entirely new fleets, Newlight’s system can be integrated into the current global shipping infrastructure. The startup’s founders emphasize that this incremental approach could offer a faster and more cost-effective path to decarbonizing an industry responsible for roughly 3% of global carbon emissions.

With the seed funds, Newlight plans to expand its team, accelerate product development, and conduct further trials with commercial shipping partners. The successful Singapore-Ghana run is a crucial proof point, showing that the hydrogen-injection system can handle long-distance ocean voyages under varying conditions. While regulators and policymakers continue to debate long-term shipping fuels, Newlight sees its solution as a bridge technology that can start cutting emissions now, not decades away.
