Maruti Suzuki's Diesel Comeback: Everything You Need to Know

Maruti Suzuki is re-entering the diesel segment after discontinuing its diesel models in 2020. The automaker is developing a new diesel engine, likely a 1.5-litre unit, which could debut in models like the Ertiga, XL6, and Brezza. This move comes as diesel demand stabilizes, particularly in larger vehicles and fleet applications.

According to Autocar India, the new engine is expected to comply with upcoming BS7 norms and may incorporate mild-hybrid technology for better efficiency. It could first appear in the next-generation Ertiga, followed by other models. Dealers have reportedly been informed about the plan, but an official timeline is yet to be announced.

Maruti Suzuki’s return to diesel is significant as it was the first automaker to exit the segment when BS6 norms made diesel engines costlier. With this step, the company aims to cater to customers who prefer diesel for its torque and fuel economy, especially in rural and semi-urban markets.
