Mahindra Expands Battery-as-a-Service to Entire Electric SUV Lineup

Mahindra has extended its innovative Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) program to cover the complete range of its Electric Origin SUVs, signaling a strategic move to reshape how Indian consumers adopt electric mobility. Rather than focusing solely on slashing upfront prices, the company is banking on a flexible ownership model that decouples battery costs from the vehicle purchase, aiming to lower entry barriers and ease range anxiety.

The BaaS structure allows customers to pay for the battery separately, either through subscription plans or per-kilometer usage, which can significantly reduce the initial financial outlay. This approach is particularly relevant in price-sensitive markets like India, where the high cost of batteries has historically hindered EV adoption. By separating battery ownership from the car itself, Mahindra also addresses concerns about battery degradation and replacement costs.

Industry analysts view this rollout as a calculated bet that financing and service architecture—more than outright price cuts—will drive the next wave of EV mass adoption in emerging economies. The move positions Mahindra to compete more aggressively against both domestic rivals and global entrants, while also building a recurring revenue stream from battery services.
