Lyft Opens Europe to North American Riders Through In-App Booking

North American Lyft users can now arrange rides across Europe without installing another app. The company has switched on early access in Barcelona and Hamburg, with London, Paris, Berlin, Rome, Athens and Warsaw joining during October, extending the service to 10 countries by month’s end.

The launch is powered by a new backend layer that links the Lyft rider app to an external marketplace and its driver pool. Because the framework was designed for Europe, Lyft says it can be pointed at additional marketplaces elsewhere, creating a repeatable playbook for entering new regions.

Riders keep their existing account and payment details, and within a year will be able to pick whether they are billed in their home or local currency. On the ground, European customers continue to book through Freenow and Gett, both of which now carry Lyft branding, while their drivers pick up North American visitors as an extra source of demand.

Sid Patil, Lyft’s Chief Rideshare and Marketplace Officer, framed the move as a step beyond the company’s local roots, describing how the same app a rider uses at home now works the moment they land in Europe and how each connected market strengthens the network for both riders and drivers.
