Lucid Lunar: A Two-Seat Robotaxi Redefining Urban Mobility

Lucid Motors has unveiled the Lunar, a two-seat autonomous taxi concept that draws inspiration from sci-fi films like Minority Report. The compact, doorless vehicle features a minimalist interior with a 36-inch display and no steering wheel, pedals, or driver—just two passenger seats. Lucid’s chief of advanced product creation, Zach Walker, notes that up to 90% of taxi trips involve only one or two passengers, making a two-seat configuration both efficient and practical.

The Lunar is the latest addition to Lucid’s midsize platform, which also includes the Cosmos and Earth SUVs. It prioritizes energy efficiency above all, targeting up to 9.7 kilometers per kilowatt-hour of battery—nearly double that of a typical electric SUV. With a smaller 55-kWh battery, the Lunar can still achieve over 500 kilometers of range. This efficiency reduces operating costs by up to 40% compared to larger robotaxis like Waymo’s Jaguar I-Pace, and faster charging times mean less downtime for fleet operators.

Walker explains that downsizing the battery triggers a ‘virtuous circle’ of weight savings, allowing for smaller supporting components. The design eliminates traditional driver controls and performance-oriented features, focusing instead on ride comfort and low noise, vibration, and harshness (NVH). The Lunar uses the same front and rear components as other Lucid midsize models, differing only in its battery size and center cabin, which simplifies production.

Equipped with Nvidia’s Drive Thor chip and a suite of sensors (lidar, cameras, radar), the Lunar is built for Level 4 or 5 autonomy. While still a concept, Lucid aims to scale production, leveraging its partnership with Uber for robotaxi deployment. Walker describes the project as a ‘midnight project’ that the team was obsessed with, believing the industry is ready for a ‘really cool takeoff.’
