LG Energy Solution Readies New 46100 Round Cell for Mercedes EVs

LG Energy Solution is preparing to add a brand-new cylindrical format to its 46-series lineup, with Mercedes-Benz lined up as the launch customer. Reports from South Korea indicate the cell measures 46 millimetres across and 100 millimetres tall, earning it the 46100 label — a size the battery maker has not previously shown publicly.

Production groundwork is expected to start next year, with deliveries to Mercedes reportedly kicking off in 2028. A first line dedicated to the new format is said to be planned at LGES’s Polish facility in Wrocław, while the company is also weighing investment in module assembly so the cells can be grouped before shipment. None of this has been formally confirmed by either company.

For LGES, the move widens an already extensive 46-series catalogue that runs from 4680 up to 46120, produced at sites in Ochang and, on earlier plans, Arizona. The 4680 size in particular is closely associated with Tesla, making a 100 mm-tall variant a notable addition rather than a variation on an existing theme.

Mercedes already counts LG Energy Solution among several battery partners, having signed multiple long-term supply deals with the Korean supplier since late 2024. The relationship is not exclusive — Samsung SDI joined the roster earlier this year, and CATL also features in the network, alongside earlier suppliers such as SK On and Farasis.
