Hainan Reaffirms Plan to End Gasoline Car Sales by 2030

Hainan has once again confirmed its commitment to banning the sale of new gasoline-powered vehicles by 2030, making it the first region in China to set such a target. The island province, known for its tropical climate and growing tourism sector, aims to accelerate its transition to clean energy and reduce emissions from the transport sector.

The policy, initially announced in 2019, is part of a broader strategy to promote electric vehicles (EVs) and hybrid options. Hainan has been actively expanding its charging infrastructure to support the shift, with a focus on achieving full electrification of its vehicle fleet. Local authorities believe the ban will drive innovation and attract investment in the new energy vehicle (NEV) industry.

While the ban applies only to new sales, existing gasoline cars will still be allowed on the roads. The province plans to phase out fossil-fuel vehicles gradually, aligning with China’s national goals to peak carbon emissions by 2030 and achieve carbon neutrality by 2060. Hainan’s move could serve as a model for other provinces considering similar measures.
