GM Targets 2028 for Hands-Free, Eyes-Off Driving in Escalade IQ

General Motors is charting a course to introduce true eyes-off driving capability in its flagship electric SUV, the Escalade IQ, by 2028. The strategy leverages the scale of its existing Super Cruise driver assistance system alongside the autonomous vehicle expertise gained through its Cruise division. This combination is seen as the architectural foundation for GM’s retail deployment of more advanced autonomy.

Rather than starting from a clean sheet, GM intends to merge the production-ready hardware and validation processes of Super Cruise with Cruise’s software and sensor stack. The result aims to deliver a system that allows drivers to disengage their eyes and attention from the road for extended periods under specific conditions, a significant step beyond the hands-free, eyes-on capabilities currently offered.

The move signals GM’s commitment to a phased approach toward fully autonomous driving, preferring to integrate advanced features into consumer vehicles rather than focusing solely on robotaxi fleets.
