Ford's $30K Fathom EV Pickup: Launch Date Still Unsettled as CEO Flags 'Heck of an Effort'

Ford’s plan to bring its entry-level Fathom electric pickup to market by early 2027 is now clouded by the company’s own admission that large-scale production hasn’t been fully figured out. CEO Jim Farley told attendees at the 2026 Automotive News Congress that launching the truck “at scale, at cost, on time” will be “a heck of an effort,” adding that Ford “hasn’t landed the plane on mass production” of its Universal Electric Vehicle platform yet. A Ford spokesperson later clarified that the 2027 target date remains unchanged.

Behind the caution is pressure from Chinese automakers. Farley noted that a BYD electric vehicle initially carried roughly a 20% battery cost edge over the Fathom, pushing Ford’s engineers to rework the motors, gearboxes, and inverters so the truck could get by with a smaller battery pack than its Chinese rival.

When it does arrive — still penciled in for early 2027 — the standard-range Fathom is expected to start at 28,350.Fordhasalreadycommitted28,350. Ford has already committed 5 billion across its Louisville Assembly Plant and the BlueOval Battery Park in Michigan to gear up for UEV production, and it hopes to move 100,000 units in the first year, though the unresolved manufacturing questions could make that target difficult to reach.

Known features include more passenger room than a Toyota RAV4, Apple Maps built directly into the navigation system, a large touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Ford’s BlueCruise hands-free system, bidirectional charging, a digital key, and a NACS charging port — prototypes have already been spotted plugging into Tesla Superchargers.
