FlixBus Puts Eight Electric Coaches on Vienna–Bratislava Schedule

FlixBus is moving battery-electric coaches from trial runs into everyday service. Eight electric buses now link the Austrian and Slovak capitals on a route that started October 1, with 66 departures planned each day.

The coaches belong to the Yutong T12E model and come from the fleet of Austrian partner Blaguss, which bought twelve of the vehicles and assigned eight to this line. Each carries a 466 kWh battery that FlixBus rates for roughly 500 kilometres. At about 80 km and largely flat, the Vienna–Bratislava corridor sits comfortably within those limits, which is exactly why it was chosen.

Charging takes place at both ends of the route, where photovoltaic arrays paired with battery storage are being used. The operator puts the CO₂ savings at about 66 kg per 100 km against running diesel coaches. The service links the two city centres as well as their airports.

FlixBus has tested electric coaches elsewhere, including a Yutong GTe14 on the London–Cambridge run in 2024 and earlier trials in Portugal, Germany and the US. What sets this project apart is that the vehicles operate in normal daily timetables from day one. Blaguss funded the purchase with private capital, supported by Austrian public money and the European NextGenerationEU programme. FlixBus frames the result as proof that electric long-distance bus travel works when route length, charging windows and high-capacity infrastructure line up.
