FedEx Places $300M Order for 2,000 Harbinger Electric Trucks

FedEx has committed to buying 2,000 battery-electric trucks from California-based startup Harbinger in a deal valued at over $300 million. The binding order covers multiple model variants, with all units slated for delivery before the end of 2027. Harbinger says it can complete the entire production run in roughly 18 months, a pace it describes as among the largest ever recorded for medium- and heavy-duty electric trucks.

The relationship between the two companies runs deeper than a simple purchase agreement. FedEx previously deployed Harbinger vehicles in an earlier pilot, and it also co-led the startup’s $160 million Series C funding round. That makes the logistics giant an investor, customer and board-level participant all at once—an arrangement that gives Harbinger a reliable anchor buyer as it scales manufacturing in the US and Canada.

Harbinger projects that each truck will cut roughly 20,000inannualfuelcostscomparedwithdieselequivalents,addinguptoabout20,000 in annual fuel costs compared with diesel equivalents, adding up to about 800 million in savings across the fleet over a 20-year lifecycle. The company also estimates the order will avoid more than 1.7 million tons of CO2, though both figures come from its own internal modeling rather than independent verification.

Paul Melander, FedEx’s Senior Vice President of Safety and Transportation, who also sits on Harbinger’s board, framed the order as a practical step toward the carrier’s electrification targets, noting that the vehicles need to handle demanding daily routes while still delivering cost benefits. Whether the projected savings hold up in real-world operations will ultimately determine how far FedEx extends its bet on the young manufacturer.
