EU Drafts Tough Emissions Rules for E-Fuel Vehicles

The European Union is preparing to require that cars running on e-fuels must have zero climate impact, according to reports. This move would place e-fuel vehicles under the same strict emissions standards as fully electric cars, closing a potential loophole in the bloc’s climate policy.

E-fuels, which are synthetic fuels made from captured carbon and renewable hydrogen, have been promoted by some automakers as a way to keep internal combustion engines alive beyond the 2035 ban on new fossil-fuel cars. However, the EU’s proposed rules would demand that these fuels be produced and used without adding any net greenhouse gases to the atmosphere.

The requirement could be technically challenging and costly, as it would necessitate full lifecycle accounting and stringent certification. It also signals the EU’s determination to ensure that only truly clean vehicles are sold after 2035, leaving little room for technologies that do not fully eliminate carbon emissions.
