E.ON Drive Infrastructure Absorbs BP Pulse's Dutch Fast-Charging Network

E.ON Drive Infrastructure has agreed to absorb the fast-charging network that BP Pulse previously ran in the Netherlands. Following the handover, the infrastructure will be managed under the Essent label, a brand already familiar to Dutch energy customers. The deal covers 79 separate charging sites, which together host 370 individual charging points.

BP Pulse had built up this network as part of its wider European charging ambitions, but the Dutch assets are now changing hands as BP reassesses where it wants to concentrate its investment. E.ON Drive, meanwhile, has been steadily expanding its footprint across Europe, and picking up an established network lets it add coverage quickly rather than building each site from scratch. The company has not disclosed the financial terms of the transaction, nor a precise timeline for the operational switchover.

For drivers in the Netherlands, the practical impact should be limited in the short term: the physical charging points remain in place, but the branding, app access, and payment handling will migrate to Essent as the transition proceeds. That kind of rebranding exercise typically requires updating contracts, back-end roaming agreements, and customer communication, which can take months to complete cleanly.

The move fits a broader pattern in the European charging market, where consolidation is accelerating as operators face pressure to scale up utilisation and keep hardware reliable. Larger energy companies with existing retail relationships, like E.ON with its Essent subsidiary, are well positioned to fold charging into their wider electricity offerings. Smaller or non-core operators, in contrast, are increasingly willing to sell assets rather than compete on thin margins.

What remains to be seen is whether the acquisition comes with any hardware upgrades or additional site investment, and how existing BP Pulse subscribers will be migrated to Essent’s systems. Those details will matter to Dutch EV owners who have come to rely on this network for long-distance travel.
