China's August NEV Wholesale Projections Point to 16% Annual Growth Amid Soft Retail Demand

According to recent industry forecasts, China’s passenger new energy vehicle (NEV) wholesale shipments for August are set to reach approximately 1.51 million units. This marks a notable 16% increase compared to the same period last year, underscoring the ongoing expansion of the electric and plug-in hybrid market.
However, the wholesale momentum contrasts with sluggish retail activity. While automakers and dealers are moving inventory into the channel, end-consumer demand appears muted, suggesting that the year-on-year surge is partly driven by inventory building and aggressive wholesale push rather than a corresponding retail boom.
Industry analysts are watching closely whether retail sales can catch up in the coming months, especially as year-end sales promotions and new model launches could stimulate buyer interest. For now, the wholesale market’s resilience highlights the complex dynamics of China’s automotive sector, where production and distribution are scaling ahead of clear consumer confidence.
