Changan's Deepal Brand Moves Hydrogen Fuel Cell Tech Into Commercial Production

Changan has pushed its Deepal sub-brand into the commercial phase for hydrogen fuel cell systems, a step that signals the Chinese automaker’s intent to keep fuel cell electric vehicles in its long-term technology mix alongside battery-electric offerings. The company says the system is now being produced for real-world use rather than remaining at the prototype stage.
According to the automaker, the fuel cell stack delivers performance figures that come in roughly 10% ahead of comparable reference benchmarks in the segment. Changan has not released a full technical dossier, so details on power density, durability targets or specific vehicle applications remain limited for now.
Hydrogen fuel cell vehicles still face familiar hurdles across most markets, from sparse refueling networks to the high cost of green hydrogen production. Even so, several Chinese manufacturers continue to fund fuel cell programs as a complement to their battery-electric lineups, particularly for larger vehicles and fleet operations.
The commercialization announcement places Deepal among a growing group of Chinese brands trying to translate fuel cell research into sellable hardware. Whether the 10% advantage translates into meaningful market traction will depend on infrastructure buildout and total cost of ownership compared with conventional battery EVs.
