CATL and Seres Lock In Long-Term Battery Supply and Export Deal

Chinese battery giant CATL and automaker Seres have signed a long-term agreement covering battery supply and export cooperation. The arrangement ties CATL’s cells and battery systems to every model under Seres’ AITO brand, giving the automaker a guaranteed source of proven, high-volume battery technology as it scales production.

For Seres, the deal represents a deliberate trade-off. Rather than spreading its sourcing across multiple cell makers to preserve bargaining power and flexibility, the company is consolidating its battery needs around a single established partner. That choice reduces supply-chain uncertainty and simplifies integration work, but it also means Seres becomes more dependent on one supplier for a component that sits at the heart of every electric vehicle it builds.

The export dimension gives the pact a second layer of significance. Seres and its AITO lineup have been pushing beyond the domestic Chinese market, and a secure battery pipeline is a prerequisite for that expansion. Localizing or at least stabilizing battery sourcing helps the automaker plan deliveries into overseas markets without the risk of cell shortages derailing launches.

CATL, meanwhile, continues to accumulate long-term commitments from Chinese automakers, reinforcing its position at the center of the country’s EV supply chain. Such agreements also help the battery maker plan capacity and raw-material purchases against predictable volumes.

The deal underscores a broader pattern in China’s EV industry: as competition intensifies and price pressure mounts, automakers are increasingly weighing the security of a mature battery partner against the leverage that comes from multi-sourcing. For Seres, the bet is that reliability and scale outweigh the flexibility it gives up.
