BYD Posts Record September: 463,561 NEVs Sold as Overseas Push Accelerates

BYD closed out September with 463,561 new energy vehicle deliveries, a 16.98% jump compared with the same month a year earlier and the company’s strongest single month so far in 2026. It was the fifth straight month of year-on-year expansion and the seventh consecutive month of sequential gains, with volume climbing 5.28% over August.
The mix tilted further toward pure electric models. Passenger BEVs reached a record 273,143 units, up 33.21% year-on-year, while passenger plug-in hybrids slipped 2.36% to 183,570 — the first annual decline for PHEVs after four months of growth. Battery-electric models made up 59.81% of passenger NEV sales, up from 52.17% a year earlier. Commercial vehicles added 6,848 units, a 113.33% annual increase.
Overseas markets did much of the heavy lifting. Exports hit 180,700 units, up 153.59% year-on-year, though slightly below August. Domestic deliveries of 282,861 were still 12.97% lower than a year ago but improved 12.77% month-on-month. Third-quarter NEV volume of 1,323,065 rose 18.75% year-on-year, ending four straight quarters of decline.
Cumulative nine-month NEV sales reached 3,131,576, down 3.94% from the prior year — a narrower gap than the 6.84% shortfall recorded through August. BYD has raised its 2026 overseas target to between 1.9 million and 2 million vehicles, according to Deutsche Bank research citing management, with ambitions above 2.5 million for 2027. The company also ran a hiring push at its Xi’an production hub, seeking more than 8,000 workers.
