Bolt Turns Scooter Sensors Into Accessibility Mapping Tool for Wheelchair Users

Bolt has introduced Wheels4Wheels, a project that leverages the hardware already mounted on its shared e-scooters to gather detailed data on sidewalk and street conditions. The goal is to give wheelchair users practical, ground-level insight into which routes are genuinely usable, addressing a gap that conventional navigation apps have largely overlooked.

Rather than relying on existing map databases, the initiative channels sensor readings from Bolt’s fleet into accessibility assessments. This approach aims to chip away at the daily obstacles wheelchair users encounter when moving through urban environments, where uneven pavement or blocked paths can turn a simple trip into a logistical challenge.

The European shared mobility operator frames the effort as a way to repurpose its existing infrastructure for broader social benefit.
