BMW Blends Electric and Combustion Power in New 3 Series Lineup

BMW has officially started taking orders for the eighth generation of its iconic 3 Series, adopting a strategy that caters to both electric vehicle enthusiasts and traditional combustion engine buyers. The lineup introduces two fully electric i3 models, which are the first core BMW vehicles to utilize the Neue Klasse architecture. The top-tier electric variant, the i3 50 xDrive, promises an impressive range of up to 912 kilometers thanks to a large 108.7 kWh battery pack. Charging capabilities are also robust, with the system supporting up to 400kW, allowing drivers to add 423 kilometers of range in just ten minutes. The entry-level electric model, the i3 40 xDrive, offers 710 kilometers of range from an 82.8 kWh battery.

While the electric variants lead with cutting-edge technology, BMW is not abandoning its traditional roots. The new range includes gasoline models equipped with 48-volt mild hybrid systems, starting with the 318 model priced at €49,900. The automaker is also planning to expand the lineup further, with a high-performance i3 M60 xDrive expected in 2027 and a plug-in hybrid variant arriving within the next year. This dual-pronged approach allows BMW to address varying consumer adoption rates while maintaining the 3 Series’ status as a versatile market staple.

Visually, both the electric and combustion models share a unified exterior design, distinguished primarily by their drivetrains. Inside, the cabin features the new Panoramic iDrive interface, marking the first time this technology is available in a 3 Series. Dr Joachim Post, BMW AG Board Member for Development, emphasized that all models benefit from the innovations brought by the Neue Klasse, including advancements in digitalization and driver assistance, describing the result as the best 3 Series to date.
