Audi Establishes Dedicated R&D Hub in Shanghai for Its New AUDI Brand

Audi has taken a significant step to accelerate its electric vehicle strategy in China by opening a dedicated research and development center in Shanghai. The new facility, called AITC, is focused entirely on the automaker’s emerging AUDI sub-brand, which was created to target the Chinese market’s unique demands.

The center will initially house a team of around 300 engineers and specialists. Their primary mission is to support the rapid expansion of the AUDI brand’s product lineup, which is expected to include four new models in the coming years. By establishing this local R&D presence, Audi aims to shorten development cycles and better integrate Chinese technologies and consumer preferences into its vehicles.

This move underscores Audi’s commitment to the world’s largest EV market, where local players are advancing quickly. The Shanghai hub will enable closer collaboration with Chinese tech partners and suppliers, potentially giving Audi a competitive edge in areas like smart cockpit features and autonomous driving.

While specific model details remain under wraps, the establishment of AITC signals that Audi is serious about tailoring its offerings to Chinese buyers. The company’s ability to innovate and adapt locally will be crucial as it navigates an increasingly crowded and fast-paced market.
