ASUS Oxiis E250G1 Turns Ordinary Bicycles Into Smart E-Bikes

ASUS has introduced a friction-drive conversion system that offers a fresh alternative to buying a brand-new electric bicycle. The Oxiis E250G1 is designed to mount onto an existing conventional bike and provide electric assistance without requiring riders to alter their gears or brakes. Installation is presented as straightforward, meaning the bike someone already owns can stay largely as it is.
The unit is rated at 250W of continuous power, with a 500W peak burst available for quick acceleration. Adaptive boost technology reads inclines and adds assistance automatically, which should make climbing noticeably easier. A wireless cadence sensor keeps the setup free of extra wiring, while a taillight that detects braking aims to improve visibility after dark.
Energy comes from a removable 158 Wh battery that recharges fully in roughly two hours through a 100W USB-C charger. According to ASUS, the Oxiis works with city, road, gravel, folding and hardtail mountain bikes, covering tire widths of up to 60mm and wheel sizes between 16 and 29 inches. Through the companion app, riders can pick between Eco, Normal and Sport modes using a single button. In Eco, the system is claimed to deliver up to 31 miles of range with a top assisted speed of 20 mph.
The pitch rests on economics and familiarity: rather than spending heavily on a dedicated e-bike, owners can electrify a machine they already know and like. Friction-drive add-ons are not a new idea, and they typically trade some efficiency and tire wear for simplicity and low cost, so how the Oxiis performs in daily use will matter. For commuters and casual riders with a serviceable bike in the garage, the concept could prove appealing.
Details on pricing and exact availability were not disclosed in the original announcement, so riders interested in the Oxiis will need to watch for further information from ASUS before deciding whether the conversion route beats simply buying an e-bike outright.
