Ampol Acquires Evie Networks for $225 Million to Expand EV Charging Reach

Australian fuel retailer Ampol is making a significant play in the electric vehicle charging space, agreeing to purchase Evie Networks for $225 million. The deal, which still requires regulatory approval, would expand Ampol’s charging footprint from just over 300 bays to more than 1,030, spread across 400 locations.
Evie Networks was previously owned by Fast Cities Australia, with former coal magnate Trevor St Baker holding a majority stake of around 80 percent. The company had received early backing from St Baker when it launched in 2017, with RACQ and staff holding smaller shares. The acquisition comes as EV sales in Australia reached a record 24.8 percent share in August and have averaged 20 percent over the past five months.
Ampol CEO Matt Halliday described the purchase as a disciplined investment timed to capture growing charging demand. He noted that public charging infrastructure is essential for broader EV adoption, particularly in a country as vast as Australia where long distances between charging points can fuel range anxiety. The company aims to generate over 10 million in cost synergies.
Evie CEO Chris Mills said Ampol recognized the value of the network’s sites, noting that four of five Evie charging locations are already situated at Ampol facilities, though most remain in metropolitan areas. Integration discussions will wait until the competition regulator approves the deal.
