ICE-32 — Engine Actuators
ASSUMPTION — This lesson covers actuators functionally; exact operating ranges are not given.
In this lesson you will learn:
- The basic actuators and their roles
- The closed-loop relationship
- The effect of an actuator fault
1. The Actuators’ Role
Actuators are the ECU’s “hands”: they convert ECU commands into physical action.
FACT — The ECU manages actuators to deliver target torque and emissions, forming a closed loop with sensor measurements.
2. Basic Actuators
| Actuator | Role |
|---|---|
| Injector | Sprays fuel |
| Ignition coil | Produces spark energy |
| Throttle | Controls air quantity |
| VVT actuator | Changes cam phase |
| Wastegate/VGT | Controls boost pressure |
| EGR valve | Sets EGR rate |
FACT — In a gasoline engine, the injector and ignition coil are the core combustion actuators; in a diesel the injector (common rail) alone initiates combustion.
3. Closed Loop
FACT — For example, lambda control: the lambda sensor measures mixture, the ECU corrects injector duration — a closed loop that holds mixture at stoichiometry (ICE-26).
4. Actuator Faults
FACT — An actuator fault directly degrades engine behavior (misfires, power loss, emission increase). OBD monitors actuator circuits and sets DTCs (ICE-42).
5. Summary
- Actuators turn ECU commands into action.
- Injector, coil, throttle, VVT, wastegate, EGR valve are basic.
- Sensors + actuators form the closed loop.
6. Sources
- Bosch, Gasoline-Engine Management and Diesel-Engine Management

Quiz
What do actuators do?
Actuators convert ECU commands into action.
What does the injector do?
The injector sprays fuel.
What does the wastegate control?
The wastegate controls boost pressure.
Which is a closed-loop example?
Lambda control is a sensor-feedback closed loop.
What does an actuator fault cause?
An actuator fault causes misfires, power loss and emission increase.
