ICE-16 — Intercooling
ASSUMPTION — This lesson covers air-to-air and water-to-air types conceptually; specific sizing/efficiency values are not given.
In this lesson you will learn:
- What the intercooler does
- How compression heats air
- The effect on density and knock
1. The Problem: Compression Heats
When the turbo compressor compresses air, the compression work raises its temperature.
FACT — Compression raises both pressure and temperature. Hot air is less dense — less oxygen mass per volume.
2. The Intercooler’s Role
The intercooler (charge air cooler) sits between the turbo and the intake manifold and cools the compressed air.
FACT — Cooling raises density: at the same boost, more oxygen mass enters the cylinder, so more fuel can be burned and more power produced.
3. Knock Margin
FACT — In gasoline engines, cooler charge air reduces knock tendency, allowing more aggressive spark advance and/or higher compression ratio (ICE-27).
4. Types
- Air-to-air — charge air cooled by ambient airflow.
- Water-to-air — charge air cooled by a coolant loop; compact but needs an extra circuit.
INTERPRETATION — Both have trade-offs: air-to-air is simple and common; water-to-air is more compact but more complex.
5. Summary
- Compression heats air and lowers density.
- The intercooler cools it, raising density and power.
- Cooler charge improves knock margin.

Quiz
Where is the intercooler located?
The intercooler sits between the turbo compressor and intake manifold.
What does compression do to air?
Compression work heats the air.
What is the intercooler's main benefit?
Cooling raises density → more oxygen mass.
Cooler charge air improves what in gasoline?
Cooler charge air reduces knock tendency.
What is the water-to-air intercooler trade-off?
Water-to-air is compact but needs an extra coolant circuit.
